Welcome Mathieu from Lyon, France! Mathieu is a pastry chef and enjoys coffee, hanging out with his wife and dachshund, cooking & making diners for his friends. Mathieu lives in what is called a canut. They were originally silk workshops where the craftsman also lived. They are recognizable by very large windows, 4 meters high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and a mezzanine above the kitchen, where the craftsman’s bedroom was. You can find Mathieu, his 1000 square foot canut, and delicious treats on Instagram.
How would you describe your style?
Well, I like mid-century modern style with all its great designers. That’s where I got my inspiration from. I like to mix materials like wood and steel, checks and flowers patterns, mixed with stripes. But what I like the most is mixing this style with some of my favorites pieces, souvenirs from vacations or second hand items, creating a warm atmosphere and making sure to not make it sterile. I want to make sure anything that I find and like will have a place in our home, regardless of its style, color or design. I don’t want to think “here is a gorgeous blue vase, it is beautiful but it won’t fit in my place”. I create an atmosphere where all the things I like have its place to shine.
When did you become interested in design?
When we bought our home, I said to myself that’s it, now we can really have fun, this place is ours. We can purchase beautiful things, invest in it. And, most of all, we fell in love with the place itself, it really gave us the desire to make it our own.
Where do you find inspiration?
I’m addicted to Youtube, I’m a huge fan of home tours, and content creators like Arvin Olano, Paige Wassel, and Nick Lewis. I love Instagram as well, such a great interior design community. And Taschen books of course!
